Sciatica Symptoms & Treatment
What is Sciatica
Sciatica, a common form of low back and leg pain, is a painful symptom that results from irritation to the sciatic nerve. Sciatica can develop suddenly or can begin slowly, but intensify over time. Unlike a herniated or degenerative disc, sciatica is a symptom of a condition instead of a condition itself.
What Causes Sciatica
The sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in the body, runs from the lower back down the length of the back of each leg. Sciatica occurs due to pressure on the sciatic nerve. The pressure on the nerve can cause pain in the lower back that spreads to the through the buttocks and into the leg. A herniated disc is the most common cause of sciatica. It can also be caused by spinal stenosis – the narrowing of the spine, or other compression or irritation of the nerve root.
Symptoms of Sciatica
Sciatica can be a debilitation disease. The most common symptoms of sciatica include:
- low back pain
- pain that radiates down one leg and foot
- hip pain
- numbness and tingling in the feet or leg
- leg weakness
- difficulty walking
