5 Things I’ve Learned From Listening to My Patients With Back Pain
At Busch Chiropractic in Fort Wayne, my staff and I have successfully treated thousands of patients. Throughout the years, I began to notice a pattern in what many of my patients were experiencing. The daily challenges of patients living with chronic back pain are strikingly consistent. If you are suffering with back pain, you are not alone. Here are five things that I’ve learned from being a chiropractor and helping patients with back pain:
1. They miss their active lifestyles.
Chronic back pain sufferers sacrifice parts of their lives that used to bring them great joy — things like sports, fitness, recreation, gardening, traveling and playing with their children or grandchildren. In many cases, the chronic pain causes a lack of sleep, which can drastically reduce energy levels and motivation. They have a decreased quality of life and have to sacrifice what they love because of pain.
2. Their work is impacted.
Many people who suffer from back pain are worried about the constant pain effecting their job. In many cases, their pain even stems from their job. Whether they work in an office or a warehouse, constant motions can aggravate their spine, making the pain worse. Many of my patients fear that they can not work to their full potential and provide for their families.
3. They feel frustrated.
Along with the physical pain, living with back pain can cause a great amount of stress, anxiety, and frustration. They are unable to perform many everyday tasks such as cleaning, cooking, or shopping. Even tying their shoes has become difficult. They are having to rely on others to help them get through the day.
4. They have tried everything to relieve the pain
Many of my patients have spent an unbelievable amount of time and money seeking different back pain treatments, in hopes of finally relieving their pain. Many of them have turned to invasive methods such as surgery or injections, all to no avail. In many cases, these treatments only offer temporary relief, and in some cases have made matters worse.
5. They have been told to just live with the pain
Many of my patients had almost given up on the idea of a pain-free lifestyle. After many failed attempts at treatment, they had lost hope. They assume that they will be suffering from back pain the rest of their lives. They have accepted the hindrance that back pain can create.
If you are suffering from back pain, you are not alone. According to the American Chiropractic Association, one half of all working Americans admit to having back pain symptoms each year. However, there is good news!
