Numbness in the hand can be alarming, especially if you can’t spot the cause of the sensation. What causes a numb hand, and how can you stop it?
We’ve all felt that numbness or tingling in the hands sensation. It could be a simple symptom of sleeping on your arm or it could be a symptom of many different conditions from nerve damage to a herniated disc.
if you’re experiencing tingling or a numb sensation in your hand that is more than just your hand “falling asleep”, here are five conditions that may be causing it and how the Busch Chiropractic Pain Center can help.
1. Herniated Disc
A slipped, ruptured, bulging, or herniated disc is a common cause of back and neck pain. The discs in your spine act as a buffer between the bones. However, these discs can tear or rupture and put pressure on your nerves.
Herniated discs can cause pain in the neck, arms, back, and legs which may cause tingling or numbness in your legs or arms.
Chiropractic treatment can relieve the pressure on the disc and stop the numb sensation in your hand. Our DRS Protocol®™ treatment uses spinal decompression to help ease the pain.
2. Diabetes
Diabetes can cause damage to your nerves. This damage is known as diabetic neuropathy and can cause tingling or numbness in your hands, fingers, feet, or toes. People with diabetes may also suffer from other nerve-related conditions.
Our specialized Busch Neuropathy Treatment Protocol™ includes the use of infrared therapy and photomodulation to help patients find relief from their numb hands related to diabetic neuropathy.
3. Carpel Tunnel Syndrome
Carpel tunnel syndrome is a disorder caused by a compressed nerve in the wrist. It’s most often caused by repetitive movements over an extended period, such as typing.
It usually affects people between 40 and 60 years old. Carpal tunnel syndrome can be quite painful and result in numbness or tingling in the hand or wrist.
Symptoms can start with numbness and tingling, but symptoms may become more painful over time. Thankfully, there are non-surgical protocols for the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome.
4. Spinal Cord Injuries
People who have been in an auto accident or suffered another type of personal injury may have some type of spinal cord injury. Damage to the spinal cord can impact your mobility, cause severe pain, and result in a feeling of numbness or a loss of sensation.
Serious spinal injuries aren’t always apparent, that’s why it’s always a good idea to seek treatment after an accident or injury just in case there’s hidden damage
5. Vitamin Deficiency
A vitamin deficiency could be the cause of your numb hands. Our bodies need certain vitamins and minerals to function properly. B vitamins, especially B1, B6, and B12, are essential for healthy nerves. For example, a B12 deficiency could lead to nerve damage as well as fatigue, muscle weakness, cognitive decline, and more. If you start to notice numb hands, get help immediately. Waiting could permanently damage the nerve.
While you can get some B12 in food, it’s harder today to get enough. And it’s recommended that people over 50, those who regularly consume alcohol, those with certain health conditions, and vegetarians and vegans take a B12 supplement.
The recommended daily intake (RDI) for vitamin B12 for people over 14 is 2.4 mcg
