50 Ways to Love Your Lumbar (with apologies to Paul Simon)
Our backs are always their for us, giving us something to lean up against, a place to hold our shirts, and bending over backwards for us, so why do we treat our backs so badly? There are millions of people who go through life living with chronic back pain. But why live with something that so negatively affects the quality of your life? As the antagonist in that Paul Simon classic says:
“it grieves me so
To see you in such pain
I wish there was something I could do
To make you smile again”
So, with that being said: here are 50 ways to love your lumbar and live your life free from back pain (OK, maybe not 50!).
Stretch out your back, Jack
You’ve been told to stretch your hamstrings before a run and to stretch your arms before lifting anyting heavy, well you should also stretch your back before any strenuous activity as well. These stretches recommended by the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) will help to ease your back pain and facilitate movement in the affected joints. Hold each stretch for 15 – 30 seconds.
- Hamstring stretch: lie on your back with one leg straight and the other bent at the knee; lift your straight leg up in the air; loop a towel or exercise band around your foot and gently pull the band toward your chest. Repeat three times on each leg.
- Piriformis stretch: either lying down or standing straight up; keep one leg straight and pull the other knee into the chest toward the opposite shoulder. Repeat three times on each leg.
- Cobra: lying on your stomach, gently push your upper body off the floor, hold and then return to start. Repeat this stretch three times.
Of course, check with your medical professional prior to attempting new exercises or starting a new exercise program.
Make a new (nonsurgical) plan, Stan
If you suffer with back pain, you may have tried many treatments to relieve your pain – prescription medications, pain management, epidurals (steroid shots), and traditional chiropractic with little to no relief. You may have even been told that back surgery is your only option or that you’ll just have to “live with the pain”. If you’ve exhausted other methods of pain relief and are considering surgery or other invasive procedures, it’s time to make a new plan.
