Study Shows Chiropractic Care Saves 40% on Low Back Pain Care

A new study, Cost of Care for Common Back Pain Conditions Initiated With Chiropractic Doctor vs. Medical Doctor/Doctor of Osteopathy as First Physician: Experience of One Tennessee-Based General Health Insurer, found that low back pain care initiated with a chiropractor saves 40 percent on health care costs when compared with care initiated through a medical doctor.  The study, used data from 85,000 Blue Cross Blue Shield insureds, over a two year time, and concludes that when insurance companies restrict access to chiropractic care for low back pain treatment this may cause higher costs for care. Back pain treatment is now about a $50 billion health care cost yearly. To allow their insureds complete access to chiropractic care could save Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee an annual $2.3 million. This is a significant savings and a better containment of costs.
